Medical Degree Courses

Generally there 3 main types of medical degree course being offered in the UK and across Europe, but there are some variations between them which enable students to gain extra qualifications and valuable work experience placements in the field of medicine. Students that undertake a medical course of this nature are typically school leavers, but a considerable amount of graduates and mature students also make up the student population at medical schools nowadays.

Medical Degrees

The most popular medical degree course is the standard one, which usually takes 5 to 6 years to complete and is open to school leavers, graduates who wish to gain further degrees and mature students who may or may not already have a degree in another subject or may be wishing to re-train to get back into the work-force.

Degree Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for degrees in this field are different for school leavers, graduates and mature students, so school leavers & mature students would usually be expected to have gained an A-Level equivalent in Chemistry and Biology and have achieved an overall qualification of A, A & B. Graduate entry requirements are set at them usually achieving a 2.1 and upwards in any subject, though some Universities will require graduates to have a degree in a certain subject. Graduates too are expected to have a pass in both A-Level Chemistry & Biology although the grades required may differ from those of school leavers do to them having gaining a degree since college.

Foundation Medical Degrees

Foundation degrees in medicine typically will last 6 years with the 1st year of study being taken up by a foundation course in medicine, hence the name. This type of course has been developed to allow those students who have not achieved an A-Level in science subjects who wish to pursue a medical degree course. Generally foundation years are taken up by under achieving school leavers and mature students but also some graduates who have not taken any medical related courses in the past but who now wish to undertake a degree in medicine.

Graduate Entry Medical Degrees

This type of degree course is much shorter in length than standard medical degree programmes as it only takes 4 years to complete and is only open to those graduates who have already gained a degree in another subject. Whilst this is good for the students who undertake them, places on these courses are highly sought after and there are usually many more applicants than there are places. Graduates who are lucky enough to get a place on this type of medical degree also benefit from being given higher funding from the government and which adds to their popularity.

Additional Medical Degree Qualifications

Those studying on medical degree course can also undertake additional BSc qualifications whilst doing a degree by doing what’s known as ‘intercalating’. This requires students to take an additional year of study but can give them a dramatic advantage over their fellow students when it comes to finding work at the end of their degree.
