1. Is the medical degree recognised in the USA, Canada and other countries?

The First Faculty of Medicine has qualified to participate in programs under the Higher Education Act of 1065 (HEA) and the Federal Student Financial Assistance Programs (Title IV, HEA programs) in the USA. The First Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Prague participates in the Federal Family Education Loan Program.

(OPE ID Number 003300400). The Faculty will be listed in the next edition of the Directory of Post-secondary Institutions published by the US Department of Education.

2. If I pass the entry exam, can I join the medical degree programme?

Yes, if you pass the entry exam you can join the degree programme irrespective of your A-level results.

3. If I take and the pass the entry exam do I have to join the programme and pay the tuition fees?

No, you can decide whether you accept or reject the place offered. The fee is only payable if you pass the exam and accept the subsequent offer of a place.

4. What is the situation regarding accommodation during holidays?

During the holidays the student can leave his/her belongings in the room but has to pay the full price. The price is the same for the whole year. It is also possible to put the belongings into storage. This is free of charge but it is not guaranteed that the student will obtain his/her former room when they return.

5. Can my relatives and friends stay in my accommodation when they visit?

The number of guestrooms is limited. It is necessary to book the room in advance.

6. Do I pay rent monthly in advance?

The student is obliged to pay the fees monthly at least 15 days before the beginning of the following month. A fee of approximately CzK 100 is charged for delay. When the student has not paid for two months he/she is asked to leave the Halls of Residence.

7. Do I have to pay a deposit?

A deposit is not required.

8. Can I reserve a single study bedroom? Is an extra fee required?

A single room cannot be guaranteed but every year there are some single rooms available for a slightly higher rent.

9. Is my accommodation guaranteed for the first year? Are other years guaranteed?

We do our best to accommodate all first year students in Halls of Residence. To date we have always had places available.

Students have to ask for accommodation during the summer semester for the next academic year according to the information given by the Head of the Halls of Residence.

10. Is breakfast available and at what cost?

Breakfast is available for a small charge, but very few students use this facility.

11. Is there a canteen for evening meals?

There is no availability for evening meals in Comenius. However, the Halls of Residence Kajetanka, which is about 5-10 minutes walk from Comenius, offers lunch and evening meals.

12. Are there sporting or other facilities in or close to the hostel?

The Halls of Residence Kajetanka has a training room and there is also a fitness centre close to the hostel.

13. What is the distance of the hostel to the faculty?

Approximately 30-45 minutes depending on transport used (bus, tram, underground or by foot).

14. Will I be met at the airport on arrival the first time? Is there a fee for this?

The student obtains a letter of accommodation in Czech, which helps him/her to contact a taxi driver. When driving the hostel is about 15 minutes from the airport.

15. Are all first year students in the same hostel?

The students are accommodated in the Halls of Resiaence Kajetanka and Comenius which are very close together. Usually the students are accommodated in the same hostel.

16. Are all other students in the hostel English speakers?

Comenius is only for foreign students; Kajetanka offers accommodation for Czech students also.

17. What are the usual semester dates?

The Fall semester starts at the end of September and lasts 15 weeks. It is interrupted after the 12th week by a two-week Christmas vacation and followed by a four-week examination period.

The summer semester lasts 15 weeks and is followed by an examination period and summer vacation. Starting from the second year summer clerkships in clinical departments are included in the curriculum.

18. Are there any student committees in operation?

All students have the opportunity to participate in the Academic Senate and they can visit the Club of Medical Students.
